LED Tubes at a Glance
The modern alternative to fluorescent tubes
If you want to replace an existing T8 fluorescent tube with modern LED technology, the most important thing is choosing a suitable replacement bulb. This is often referred to as an LED fluorescent tube, although the technically correct term is LED tube. The key requirement is that the new T8 LED tube is compatible with the existing luminaire. Start by checking the length of the current tube, the G13 base and the technology used in the existing tube light. EGLO offers T8 LED tubes with a G13 base in the common nominal lengths of 590, 1,214 and 1,514 mm, often rounded to 600, 1,200 and 1,500 mm. Alongside standard versions, the range includes particularly efficient Expert Premium models as well as two versions with an integrated motion sensor. This allows you to replace an old fluorescent tube with an LED without having to replace the entire luminaire.
Which LED tube fits your existing luminaire?
When replacing a fluorescent tube, use the specifications of the old tube as your guide. If the T8 shape, G13 base and length match, you have already completed the first important step. The sizes 60, 120 and 150 cm are common nominal dimensions, so you should also compare the exact length of the new LED tube with the existing bulb. Next, check the technology used in the luminaire. If it contains a starter, the corresponding EGLO LED tubes with G13 base are suitable for use with an electromagnetic ballast. The appropriate LED starter is included and replaces the existing starter. These models are not suitable for luminaires with electronic ballasts.
EGLO LED tubes in 60, 120 and 150 cm
The required length of the new LED tube depends on the existing T8 fluorescent tube and the luminaire. EGLO offers the three common nominal sizes of 60, 120 and 150 cm as both standard and Expert Premium versions. Depending on the format, the corresponding LED tubes measure 590, 1,214 or 1,514 mm.
60 cm LED tube
A 60 cm LED tube is the right replacement if your luminaire already uses a short T8 fluorescent tube of this size. EGLO models have an actual length of 590 mm, a diameter of 28 mm and a G13 base. The 60 cm format is available with neutral white light at 4,000 and 6,000 Kelvin.
120 cm LED tube
If your existing luminaire requires the common 120 cm format, choose a 120 cm LED tube. The corresponding T8 LED tubes from EGLO have an actual length of 1,214 mm and also feature a G13 base. The standard models provide 1,700 lumens and are available in warm white at 3,000 Kelvin, neutral white at 4,000 Kelvin or daylight white at 6,500 Kelvin. Expert Premium versions provide 2,500 lumens, achieve energy efficiency class C and are available in either 3,000 or 4,000 Kelvin. An Expert Premium version with 4,000 Kelvin and an integrated motion sensor is also available.
150 cm LED tube
A 150 cm LED tube replaces a correspondingly long T8 fluorescent tube in an existing luminaire with a G13 base. The EGLO versions have an actual length of 1,514 mm and a diameter of 28 mm. For this format, standard models are available with 2,600 lumens in 3,000, 4,000 or 6,500 Kelvin. The Expert Premium tube provides 3,700 lumens, achieves energy efficiency class C and is available in either 3,000 or 4,000 Kelvin. The range also includes a 150 cm version with 4,000 Kelvin and an integrated motion sensor.
Expert Premium LED tubes: three key benefits
EGLO Expert Premium LED tubes combine the classic T8 tube format with a more robust design, higher light output and additional functional options.
1. Shatter-resistant plastic coating
Expert Premium products are enclosed in a plastic sleeve, making them shatter-resistant. The coating provides additional protection for the tube and makes it a robust replacement solution for existing T8 luminaires. Shatter-resistant does not mean unbreakable, but it reduces the risk of damage compared with an unprotected glass tube.
2. Better energy efficiency class C
While the standard versions in the EGLO range are rated energy efficiency class E, the Expert Premium models achieve energy efficiency class C. This means they produce significantly more light at a comparable power consumption. The difference is particularly clear with the 60 cm format: 1,650 lumens instead of 1,100 lumens at 10 watts in both cases.
3. LED tubes with integrated motion sensor
Two Expert Premium models feature an integrated motion sensor: one 120 cm and one 150 cm LED tube. The motion detector senses movement within its detection range and switches the light on automatically. The sensor function is integrated directly into the replacement bulb, so no separate motion detector is required.
Replacing a T8 fluorescent tube with LED: step by step
For the replacement, follow this sequence:
Check the shape and base: The existing tube should be a T8 tube with a G13 base.
Compare the length: Select the nominal size of 60, 120 or 150 cm to match the existing tube and check the exact product dimensions.
Check the starter: If a starter is present, the appropriate EGLO LED tube can be used with the supplied LED starter.
Check the ballast: The models described here are designed for electromagnetic ballasts, not electronic ballasts.
Choose the light colour: Depending on the available version, select between 3,000, 4,000 and 6,500 Kelvin.
Switch off the power supply before replacing the tube. If you are unsure which ballast is installed in the luminaire, have the compatibility checked by a qualified electrician.
FAQs
Which LED tube is suitable as a replacement for a fluorescent tube?
Match the shape, base and length of the fluorescent tube currently in use. For the EGLO models described here, you need a T8 LED tube with a G13 base and a suitable luminaire with a starter or electromagnetic ballast.
What do 60 cm, 120 cm and 150 cm LED tube sizes mean?
These measurements refer to the common nominal sizes. The actual lengths of EGLO T8 LED tubes are 590, 1,214 and 1,514 mm. The important point is that the dimensions match your existing tube luminaire.
What is the difference between Expert Premium and the standard versions?
Expert Premium models feature a shatter-resistant plastic coating and achieve the better energy efficiency class C. Two Expert Premium models are also available with an integrated motion sensor.
Which light colours are EGLO T8 LED tubes available in?
The standard 120 and 150 cm models are available in 3,000, 4,000 or 6,500 Kelvin, while the 60 cm format is available in 4,000 Kelvin. Expert Premium models are available in 120 and 150 cm with 3,000 or 4,000 Kelvin and in the 60 cm format with 4,000 Kelvin. The motion-sensor models use 4,000 Kelvin.
Are EGLO T8 LED tubes dimmable?
No. According to the catalogue, the T8 LED tubes with G13 base described in the range are not dimmable.
