Driveway lighting overview
Driveway lighting for easy parking and a clear view
The right driveway lighting helps you feel safe when parking and gives your home a welcoming first impression. At EGLO, you’ll find driveway lights that are functional while also looking modern. Depending on your driveway, combining several lights can be worthwhile. For long driveways, we recommend several light sources spaced 3–5 metres apart. This helps prevent dark areas and provides even illumination. When choosing your lights, pay attention to the light output: around 100–200 lumens per m² is ideal for driveways. This allows you to see paths, boundaries and obstacles immediately – without the light being too bright.
Outdoor lighting for driveways
Well-planned lighting for your driveway makes your outdoor area much more practical. You can immediately see where you can drive or walk and move around safely – even in rain or darkness. For effective driveway lighting, the following combination works well:
Edge lighting for orientation
Wall lights for the entrance area
Area lighting for wide driveways
When it comes to light colour, you can choose between:
2,700–3,300 K (warm white) for a welcoming overall look
3,300–5,300 K (neutral white) for clear visibility when manoeuvring
For outdoor areas, make sure your lights have a protection rating of at least IP44, or preferably IP54 or IP65. This ensures your lights are reliably protected against water and dirt.
Driveway lighting with a motion sensor
Driveway lighting with a motion sensor is one of the most practical solutions for everyday use. The light switches on automatically as soon as you drive into the driveway or approach it, so it does not need to remain switched on continuously. Combined with LED technology, you get full brightness immediately. This means your driveway is optimally illuminated exactly when you need it.
Which lighting is right for your driveway?
For small driveways, 1–2 light sources are often enough. Larger areas benefit from several lights positioned along the driveway. Arrange your driveway lighting so that no dark zones remain. Even lighting makes manoeuvring easier and significantly improves safety.
Safety and orientation through lighting
Good driveway lighting reduces the risk of tripping and makes edges, walls and plants visible. Choose glare-free lighting and position your lights carefully. This allows you to see everything immediately without being dazzled.
Design meets function
Alongside functionality, appearance also plays an important role. Modern driveway lighting blends naturally into your home’s architecture and garden instead of looking out of place. This creates a harmonious overall look – from the carport to the front door.
FAQs
How many lumens do I need for my driveway?
Allow around 100–200 lm/m². For a driveway measuring 20 m², you will therefore need a total light output of approximately 2,000–4,000 lumens.
Which light colour is best?
Neutral white (3,300–5,300 K) is ideal for good visibility. Warm white (2,700–3,300 K) is a good choice if a welcoming appearance is more important to you.
Which IP rating should I choose?
At least IP44, or preferably IP54 or IP65 – especially for freestanding driveway lights without overhead cover.
Is a motion sensor worthwhile?
Yes. Driveway lighting with a motion sensor saves energy and ensures that the light switches on automatically when needed.
How many lights do I need?
For short driveways, 1–2 lights are enough. For longer driveways, plan one light source every 3–5 metres to ensure even illumination.
